Speaking of annoying things...
Today is the anniversary of the Edmond Fitzgerald sinking. And worse than that, it is the anniversary of the inspiration of the song "The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald" by Gordon Lightfoot. I don't know which is a bigger shipwreck. One killed twenty nine men and one killed F.M. light rock radio for the past thirty years.
You know, I remember hearing that song for the first time in the early eighties at the orthodotist office when I was getting something tightened. Between an Olivia Newton John song and something by Billy Joel, this sea dirge came on. Even then, I thought this was the worst song I had ever heard, but I thought that perhaps in time, with maturity, I would grow to like it because it sounded real mature and intelligent. Well, I still hate it. And you know the weird part? The Edmond Fitzgerald sank in 1975. I always thought it was about some ship that went down in the 1700's or something. I mean when you hear it it sounds like some old depressed pirate singing it. And another weird thing? It sank in a freakin lake. Not an ocean. A lake. Sure it is a Great Lake while on the way to a port in Cleveland, but that also takes some of the "magic" out of it. I mean, couldn't they get a lift from some chicks on a jet ski or a party barge. I mean when you think about it, about that many people died on lake Lewisville the year Dennis Rodman had his boat out there, and you don't hear any songs about them.
So if you are flipping around the dial this week and you here that depressing dirge full of historical facts noone cares about... go ahead and change the channel like you normally would. No sense subjecting yourself to it again.
